Bu Sarmi
Bu Sarmi has drawn batik for 46 years, the last fourteen at GURAT. She draws the Golden Phoenix silks, one a month, and checks every kain panjang before it is folded and labelled.
GURAT started in 2011 with three makers drawing for other labels. Today eleven of us work in one house in Desa Babagan.
The house has a long verandah, where the drawing is done, and a well in the yard. Every piece on this site was drawn there. Garments are cut and sewn in the room behind the showroom by Pak Hadi, who has tailored kebaya in Lasem since the nineties.
Gurat means a fine scratched line. We chose the name because a maker's hand shows most in the thinnest lines, and those are the ones we never rush.
The makers
Every piece carries the name of the woman who drew it. These two sign the most cards.

Mbak Wulan
Wulan joined at nineteen and trained under Bu Sarmi for three years. She now draws most of our silk, including the Burung Hong Silk and the Naga Biru.
